全部拍賣 / Ethnographic / 75g Leopard Skin Jasper Skull – The face behind the...

Since the 13th century, the Venetian nobility hid during Carnival behind masks such as the Bauta or the Volto — pale, porcelain-like, deliberately expressionless, so that rank and name disappeared behind the surface. Paradoxically, this anonymity allowed a different, unbound truth: Whoever was nobody could suddenly be anything. What truly happened beneath the pale mask remained hidden from the eyes of the ball society — until the moment came when it fell, and the real face, in all its redness and vitality, was unveiled. Exactly these two states are borne by this skull side by side: the back of the head remains in a delicate white-pinkish, calm and restrained as the mask itself, while the face reddens into a rich, uniform red — not an outburst, but rather the moment of unveiling in which finally what lay underneath all along becomes visible. Mineralogically, Leopard Skin Jasper, despite the name, is not true jasper but an orbicular rhyolite — a volcanic rock whose characteristic circular patterns are created by radial crystal growth during cooling. The main collecting region lies near Chihuahua and Agua Caliente in Mexico. Material: Leopard Skin Jasper – orbicular rhyolite Origin: Chihuahua, Mexico Dimensions: 4.9 x 3.6 x 3.3 cm Weight: 75 g Special features: Striking two-tone between a delicate white-pinkish back of the head and an intensely colored red facial area; pronounced orbicular patterning
