Tenuta San Guido – Le Difese 2024 Toscana IGT Lotto of 6 bottles of 0.75 L Le Difese 2024 is the most immediate and convivial wine from Tenuta San Guido, the historic Bolgheri estate famous worldwide for Sassicaia. Born with the 2002 harvest, Le Difese was conceived as an introduction to the estate’s style: an elegant and versatile Tuscan red in which the character of Sangiovese meets the structure and imprint of Cabernet Sauvignon. The meaning of “Le Difese” The name Le Difese derives from the boar’s fangs, an element depicted on the label and tied to the estate’s identity. Tenuta San Guido regards it as its own “welcome” wine: more approachable and immediate than Sassicaia and Guidalberto, yet produced following the same winemaking philosophy and with a precise territorial identity. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon Le Difese arises from the combination of two varieties: Sangiovese, which brings freshness, fruity fragrance and a character typically Tuscan; Cabernet Sauvignon, the guiding thread of Tenuta San Guido’s production, which lends structure, depth and personality. The estate also notes that Le Difese can incorporate selections from massal selections originating from Sassicaia and Guidalberto production, a detail particularly interesting for understanding the philosophy of this wine. The territory The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes of Tenuta San Guido come from vineyards characterized by complex soils, with significant presence of limestone, alberese, gabbro and stones, in addition to clay components. The vineyards involved are located at different altitudes, roughly between 100 and 300 meters above sea level, benefiting from the Bolgheri terroir influence and the proximity of the sea. Vinification and style The grapes are carefully selected and vinified in stainless steel at controlled temperature. Malolactic fermentation takes place in steel, while aging also uses French oak barriques previously employed for the estate’s higher-end wines. The specific methods may vary depending on the vintage. The aim is to preserve mainly the fruit and the pleasure, avoiding an excessively invasive structure. Organoleptic characteristics Le Difese stands out for a fresh, soft and elegant style. The aromatic profile generally recalls cherry, red berries and forest fruits, accompanied by floral, spicy and herbaceous nuances. On the palate it shows an balanced structure, soft and well-integrated tannins and a pleasant freshness. Sangiovese provides liveliness and a distinctly Tuscan character, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds body and depth. It is a wine designed to be enjoyed relatively young as well, with a versatile and gastronomic character. Tenuta San Guido itself describes it as an expression of elegance, freshness and great drinkability. Tenuta San Guido occupies a fundamental place in the history of Italian oenology. The project started by Mario Incisa della Rocchetta in 1942 led to the birth of Sassicaia, initially intended for family and friends and later marketed starting in 1971 with the 1968 vintage. Sassicaia production was subsequently joined by Guidalberto, born with the 2000 vintage, and Le Difese, with the 2002 harvest.
