2023 Domaine Coste-Ubesse « Moja Negra » - Languedoc - 6 Bottles (0.75L)

6 bottles from Domaine Coste-Ubesse, MOJA NEGRA 2023 cuvée in Pic Saint Loup. The Coste-Ubesse wine comes from two adjacent Syrah plots totaling barely 3 hectares and cultivated in organic farming. This parcel, located in the municipality of Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers in Hérault, is a hillside with clay-limestone pebbly soil on fissured marls facing north (Ubesse = Ubac, meaning north in Occitan). “My grandfather Eugène, strolling through his vines, taught me to observe the cicadas, as if mated to the bark of a prickly juniper, a cork oak, or a great Aleppo pine. The shrubs, rockroses, gill-flowers, and scrubland shoots are here the companions of the vines. They sink their roots beyond the limestone pebbles into the soft clay of Coste-Ubesse, the north-facing slope. This orientation tempers the scorching heat of the summer sun; the estate shelters the plants from sudden winter assaults. Everything here favors the tranquil growth to full ripeness of the grapes that make my wines.” “According to my research, the Reboul family have been winemakers from father to son without interruption since 1700 (I could not go back further…). A sign of fate, they were at the time owners in Saint Pargoire, the commune on which we, with Jean Luc, bought a few hectares of vines to complement the Coste-Ubesse operation at Pic Saint Loup, without me realizing it at the time…” “A cuvée 100% Syrah Grenache with bewitching scents of licorice and vanilla, long on the palate, which aged two years in barrique before bottling.” Magnificent.
