Pauillac (in the restricted regional area of Mouton Pontet GPL Pichon Latour) was during harvest between mid-September and the end of the first week of October noticeably and subsequently less affected by rain than St-Julien and St-Estèphe. The rainfall amounts – and this was also noticeable in the wines of Latour, Pichon Comtesse, and Grand-Puy-Lacoste – were well under 50 mm. This, on the contrary, further fueled the final ripeness, and thus the four wines mentioned above tasted accordingly. Pontet Canet has once again drifted completely into a powerful Burgundian style, with intense black cherry, a lot of licorice, violet, but also lavender, fine sweet Pakistani Night and ripe mango. The whole thing is delicate and ethereal. The palate entry is cool, slender, and then like a gentle silky velour flow, nothing rough, no harsh acidity. Though it shows great freshness, everything remains in great harmony, floating. Here it continues what the previously mentioned Latour, Pichon Comtesse, and Grand-Puy-Lacoste have already shown. The incredible finesse of a vintage, the fruity drive underneath is completely overwhelmed by this incredible finesse. Only on the second and third tastings, only after about a quarter of an hour, does one realize the massive tannin beneath this Burgundian delicacy. This is such an incredible delicacy, but you really have to immerse yourself in the Pauillac region. Above all, you have to distance yourself from the many disappointing, coarse and sometimes thin wines that Pauillac also has. But the tops in Pauillac are simply grand, and I may be unfair to them for not giving any Pauillac wine a clean 100 points. Perhaps one should do it for Latour, Pichon Comtesse, and Pontet Canet. I therefore rate it, for its internal tension and incredible finesse, a touch below 100.
