1871 Pattern Quarter Dollar. Judd-1096, Pollock-1232. Rarity-7. Silver.

The Bass Specimen of Judd-1096 1871 Standard Silver Pattern Quarter 1871 Pattern Quarter Dollar. Judd-1096, Pollock-1232. Rarity-7. Silver. Reeded Edge. Proof-66 (PCGS). CAC. Obv: Longacre's seated Indian Princess design with flags, globe, and Liberty cap on pole, 13 stars around the periphery, and the date 1871 below. Rev: Standard Silver design with the denomination 25 CENTS within an open-topped wreath of cotton and corn. The word STANDARD is inscribed along the upper border. Deep champagne mirrors and frosty motifs display a scattering of delicate neon blue, violet, and pinkish-rose iridescence. Much like the transitional 1860 half dime, this is a "coin without a country" and lacks UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on either side. It was designed by James Barton Longacre but was executed by William Barber after Longacre's death on New Year's Day 1869. These dies were also struck in copper (Judd-1097, Rarity-7) and aluminum (Judd-1098, Rarity-8). It is thought that about a dozen or so silver examples of Judd-1099 currently exist. This is the Harry W. Bass, Jr. specimen, a coin that we have had the privilege of bringing to auction two other times in the past. Provenance: Ex Stanley I. Kesselman, November 11, 1971; Harry W.
