Magnificent 1871 Judd-1111 Pattern Half Dollar Popular Indian Princess Design 1871 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-1111, Pollock-1247. Rarity-7-. Silver. Reeded Edge. Proof-67 (PCGS). Obv: Liberty is seated facing left with the date 1871 below. She wears a Native American headdress, supports a liberty pole with her right hand, and her left hand rests on a globe inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle the border, and two flags are behind the portrait. Rev: A wreath of corn and cotton surrounds the denomination 50 / CENTS with the word STANDARD above. This wonderfully original Superb Gem Proof exhibits iridescent undertones of gold, blue, rose and orange-apricot to rich pewter gray, steel-olive and russet patina. A smartly impressed and visually stunning specimen, a coin for which the overall quality and appearance is easily equivalent to the assigned grade. This type combines the Longacre "Indian Princess" obverse design with stars with the Standard Silver reverse design of 1870. The uspatterns.com website suggests that this combination was implemented by William Barber, as Longacre died in 1869, and notes that examples were originally sold as part of complete sets from the half dime to the silver dollar. The census listing on that site includes only 11 specimens of Judd-1111, two of which are permanently impounded in museum collections. Provenance: Possibly from our (Bowers and Ruddy's) Armand Champa Collection sale, May 1972, lot 1051. PCGS Population (all categories): 1; 0 finer. There are no grading events listed in the PCGS DCAM category. PCGS# 61370. NGC ID: 2A4D. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
