1866 Pattern Shield Nickel. Judd-495, Pollock-582. Rarity-7+. Copper. Plain Edge. Proof-64+ BN (PCGS). Obv: Similar to the adopted Shield nickel design, but the date is divided by the ball of the shield and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is expressed in tiny letters. The remnants of an errant T can be seen in the field slightly past the final letter T in TRUST. Rev: A short digit 5 with pointed flag is set within a laurel wreath, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. Lovely golden-rose bronze surfaces are sharply struck with a soft satin texture overall. Provenance: From Heritage's sale of the Bob R. Simpson Collection, February 2021 Signature Auction, lot 3189.
