1857 Pattern Quarter Eagle. Judd-189, Pollock-226. Rarity-7-. Copper.

Rare and Historic 1857 Judd-189 Pattern Quarter Eagle The Only Example Certified by PCGS and CAC 1857 Pattern Quarter Eagle. Judd-189, Pollock-226. Rarity-7-. Copper. Reeded Edge. Proof-65 BN (PCGS). CAC. Obv: High Date variety. Liberty head faces left with 13 stars around the border and the date 1857 below. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, and her hair is tied back with a ribbon. The portrait is almost identical to that used on the regular issue nickel three-cent piece of 1865 to 1889. Rev: An eagle with upraised wings and a shield on its breast clutches three arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in its right talon. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border and the denomination 2 1/2 D. is below. Fully struck with lovely color, this is about as nice as toned copper can be. The dominant color is a ich tobacco brown, but with vivid cobalt blue undertones shining forth powerfully as the surfaces rotate into direct lighting. The strike is mostly razor sharp on softly frosted devices, the fields modestly semi-reflective and filled with faint die polish lines. An important and rare type, this is the first U.S. Mint pattern for a gold denomination other than the dollar or double eagle. The uspatterns.com website lists only eight specimens, only two of which are of the High Date variety offered here. Provenance: Ex possibly Dr. J. Hewitt Judd, per the uspatterns.com website; unknown intermediaries; Superior's Pre-Long Beach Sale of September 2002, lot 1554, as NGC Proof-65 BN; Bob R.
