1840-D Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. Winter 1-A. EF Details--Damage (PCGS).

1840-D Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. Winter 1-A. EF Details--Damage (PCGS). The first Liberty Head quarter eagle from the Dahlonega Mint, the 1840-D has a low mintage of 3,532 pieces. Unlike many other first year issues in U.S. coinage history, the 1840-D was not saved to an appreciable extent, if at all. Attrition through commercial use was consequently very high, and today it is likely that only about 100 coins are extant in all grades (per PCGS CoinFacts). Doug Winter ranks the 1840-D as the third rarest Dahlonega Mint quarter eagle in terms of total number of coins extant in all grades. The offered coin is sure to catch the eye of budget minded Southern gold specialists. Struck from an advanced state of the Winter 1-A dies, both sides exhibit several sharp radial cracks from the borders into the centers. Provenance: From the Bryan C. Tipton Collection. Earlier from our sale of the G.L. Hermann Collection, June 2025 Showcase Auction, lot 2319. PCGS# 7719. NGC ID: 25GC. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
