1839-O/O Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-4. Rarity-4. Repunched Mintmark. EF Details--Improperly Cleaned (NGC). A scarce variety of the 1839-O half dollar, GR-4 shares its obverse die with GR-3 but employs a new reverse that would subsequently be reused for GR-5. Similar to GR-1, the mintmark is repunched, though the repunching is considerably more prominent here. In the earliest die state of GR-4, the reverse is rotated nearly 180°, while in later states, as here, it is realigned to the expected orientation. Graham calls this later die state "Stage a," and the obverse die crack extending from star 1 through star 3 is sufficiently bold that examples in this state can be readily attributed without magnification. Another bisecting crack extends from the rim through the bust to star 12 and onward to the opposite rim. On the reverse, a thin die crack connects the bottoms of ITED STATES, while a clash mark appears at the right side of the eagle's upper left wing. Obvious hairlines account for the designation from NGC, and the surfaces are somewhat muted. The fields and devices are otherwise fairly smooth, however, and the coin remains reasonably presentable. Any 1839 New Orleans half dollar is readily collectible and desirable as a key-date issue, but the scarce GR-4 attribution adds further interest for the specialist in the series. Graham assigned GR-4 a Rarity-4 rating in 2012, while Koenings designated it Rarity-4+ in his 2024 census. Jim Koenings Commentary: My Koenings Newsletter #64 (12-15-24) ranks this die marriage as R-4+ (81 to 120 known). Most 1839-O Normal examples have obverse die breaks near star 1, and it is the more difficult variety to find in higher grades. My records of sales indicate that there are a total of 60 known specimens of 1839-O medallic and 1839-O coin alignments combined. Few collectors have both die states. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. PCGS# 531109. BASE PCGS# 6181. NGC ID: 24G7. Click here for certification details from NGC.
