1838 Pattern Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Restrike. Judd-77, Pollock-85.

Lovely and Rare Judd-77 Pattern Liberty Seated Half Dollar A Restrike from the 1870s Only Four Known 1838 Pattern Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Restrike. Judd-77, Pollock-85. Rarity-7+. Copper. Plain Edge. Proof-65 BN (NGC). CAC. The reverse is rotated approximately five degrees clockwise from medallic alignment, with Liberty's head opposite the second letter T in STATES. Obv: Very similar to the design adopted for regular issue Liberty Seated half dollar coinage in 1839, of the No Drapery type, but with some differences. The letters in the word LIBRTY on the scroll are incuse, and the date is straight. Rev: An upright eagle with spread wings clutches an olive branch in its right talon and a group of three arrows in its left. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border and the denomination HALF DOLLAR is below. Wonderfully original surfaces are toned in a gentle mottling of steel-blue and golden-copper on the obverse, the reverse with plenty of faded pinkish-orange mint color blanketed in copper-rose and antique gold patina. An exacting strike has brought forth fully even the most trivial elements of the design, the dies also imparting subtle cameo-like contrast between reflective field and softly frosted motifs. A few inoffensive carbon flecks are scattered about, more so on the obverse, one in the field inside stars 12 and 13 particularly useful as an identifier for provenance purposes. "Patterns" of this design come in four metallic composition and edge type combinations; all are restrikes from the 1870s and best described as fantasy pieces made for the numismatic trade. The present example shows considerable evidence of die rust around the reverse periphery. Judd-77 struck in copper with a plain edge is known to the extent of just four pieces, per the uspatterns.com website, this being the first specimen that we have brought to auction since 2012. In that earlier year the Lemus Collection coin sold in our August 2012 Philadelphia ANA Auction, lot 11592, as NGC Proof-66 RB. Provenance: Ex Numismatics, Ltd., August 12, 1974, from an unspecified trade; Harry W. Bass Research Foundation; Heritage's sale of Selections from the Harry Bass, Jr. Foundation's A.N.A. Museum Display, August 2014 Chicago ANA Signature Auction, lot 5793; Legend Rare Coin Auctions' sale of the Steven Cook Collection, Part II, July 2018 Regency Auction 27, lot 505. Combined PCGS and NGC Population: just 1 in all grades in the BN category. CAC Stickered Population: 2 in all grades. PCGS# 11309. NGC ID: 296W. Click here for certification details from NGC.
