1838 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-15. Rarity-3.

1838 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-15. Rarity-3. AU-58 (NGC). Well-struck devices and attractive surfaces make this a fine type example of the Reeded Edge half dollar. Graham notes that this variety can be found in nearly any grade and is usually very well struck apart from weakness at DOL. and the S of STATES on the reverse, as seen here. While multiple die cracks are present on the obverse, they are thin and unobtrusive. The curving crack at the top of Liberty's cap and another extending from above star 7 into her curls are usually present, although Prime examples without these cracks do exist. On the reverse, Graham identifies a pre-lapping state in which recutting is visible between the F and D of HALF DOL. Following lapping, this recutting is no longer visible; Graham designates this later state "Stage a," as seen here. In this state, a die crack also extends from the rim below the second A of AMERICA into the eagle's left wing. In his 2024 census, Koenings assigned GR-15 a Rarity-1 rating, compared with Graham's Rarity-3 assessment in 2012. Jim Koenings Commentary: I consider this the most common 1838 die marriage and rate it R-1. The second digit 8 in the date is punched into the die noticeably higher than on any other 1838 die marriage. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. Earlier from Heritage's Dallas Signature Auction of March 2018, lot 7326. PCGS# 6177. NGC ID: 24G5. Click here for certification details from NGC.
