1819 John Binns Declaration of Independence

John Binns' 1819 engraved reproduction of the Declaration of Independence, published in Philadelphia by James Porter. One of the most elaborate early printed representations of the founding document, combining the text and facsimile signatures of the signers with an ornate patriotic design. The Declaration is surrounded by thirteen medallions representing the original states, with portraits of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and John Hancock above the text. The engraving incorporates an American eagle, patriotic emblems and decorative foliage. Credits along the lower border identify the contributing artists and engravers, including George Bridport, Thomas Sully, George Murray, C.H. Parker and J.B. Longacre. The facsimile signatures were engraved by Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co. from the original signatures held by the Department of State. Below the composition is a facsimile endorsement by Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, dated April 19, 1819, certifying the accuracy of the reproduced Declaration and signatures. The lower margin also bears Binns' printed dedication to the American people and the copyright notice dated November 4, 1818. Matted and housed in a substantial decorative frame. Sight measures 24.5" x 35", with overall framed dimensions of 34" x 46". Exhibits toning and scattered foxing, particularly along the margins, with visible creases and wrinkles in the lower portion, including several extending into the engraved decoration. Not examined out of frame. Estimate $20,000 - $30,000
