1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar. BB-21, B-1. Rarity-1. Two Leaves.

1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar. BB-21, B-1. Rarity-1. Two Leaves.

Enticing Mint State 1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar Previously from the Eliasberg Collection 1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar. BB-21, B-1. Rarity-1. Two Leaves. MS-63 (PCGS). A beautiful coin which retains the desirable mauve, sandy-gold and blue-gray toning seen on most of the high grade Eliasberg silver coins. The fields retain their reflective nature imparted by the dies more than 230 years ago. Traces of underlying blue, gold, pink and apricot iridescence are also present to further treat the viewer aided by direct lighting. The strike is typical for this die pairing with minor softness on the high points of Liberty's curls and the eagle's breast, but razor sharp to full detail elsewhere. A trio of thin adjustment marks (as made) are found through the letters TES in STATES to the border nearby, others much fainter near the eagle in the field. The surfaces have scattered handling marks, including a short, shallow scratch below Liberty's eye that joins with a tiny carbon spot at the tip of the bust to serve as useful identifiers for provenance purposes. Overall, however, there is nothing here that really distracts the eye. For general eye appeal and surface quality, this is certainly one of the finer examples of Flowing Hair dollars to exist and would stand up to comparison with other high grade survivors of its type. The second of only two dates in the United States Mint's premier silver dollar series, 1795 is the preferred type candidate for the Flowing Hair design given the rarity of the 1794 in all grades. Bowers-Borckardt 21 is the second most available die marriage of the issue after BB-27, and examples are particularly popular for type purposes. Extremely Fine examples are scarce, and AU coins are considerably rarer. Writing in the 2013 edition of his early dollar encyclopedia, Q. David Bowers states that "a dozen or more true Mint State coins exist in private hands" - confirming the importance of the opportunity that this example represents. This coin is included in Bowers' list of "Notable Specimens" for the 1795 BB-21 variety, listed fourth as NGC MS-63 therein, and is also ranked CC#4 in the Winter 2025 revision to Stephen J. Herrman's Auction Prices Realized for Early Silver Dollars: 1794-1803. A readily attributable die, the obverse of BB-21 exhibits more or less bold remnants of a 1 underdigit beneath the primary digit 7 in the date. This die was also used to strike examples of the BB-22 and BB-23 varieties. On the reverse of BB-21, there are four berries on the branch below the eagle's left wing, three inside and one outside, and a leaf ends directly below the first letter S in STATES. This reverse was also used in the BB-20 and BB-24 die pairings. Provenance: Property from an Alabama Family. Earlier ex our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, April 1997, lot 2171; Philip Flannagan; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Philip Flannagan Collection, November-December 2001, lot 4208, as NGC MS-63; Robert Lehman; Cardinal Collection; our (American Numismatic Rarities') sale of the Cardinal Collection of Early Silver Dollars, June 2005, lot 12, as PCGS MS-62; Heritage's Dallas Signature Auction of December 2005, lot 903, as PCGS MS-62; our (Stack's) Norweb Collection sale of November 2006, lot 420, as NGC MS-63; Ira & Larry Goldberg's Pre-Long Beach Auction of May 2007, lot 1304, as NGC MS-63; our (Bowers and Merena's) Orlando Rarities Sale of January 2010, lot 405, as NGC MS-63; our Baltimore Auction of June 2011, lot 4001, as NGC MS-63. The Flannagan Collection sale cataloger confused the early provenance of this coin with that of the Eliasberg BB-20 silver dollar, lot 2170 in our April 1997 sale, which error traveled with this coin through a few subsequent auction appearances before being corrected. PCGS Population (all die marriages of the Two Leaves variety): 2; 9 finer (MS-65+ finest). PCGS# 39986. BASE PCGS# 6853. NGC ID: 24WZ. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
