"1789" Mott Token. Rulau-E NY 612, Breen-1025. Thin Planchet. Engrailed

"1789" Mott Token. Rulau-E NY 612, Breen-1025. Thin Planchet. Engrailed Edge. MS-62 (PCGS). CAC. OGH. Medium copper brown with hints of mahogany and olive, both sides reveal hints of frosty luster as the surfaces rotate into direct lighting. The strike is a bit soft at the clock face and in the opposite area at central reverse, but otherwise the detail is extremely sharp for one of these, a combination of fine preservation and the very early die state that is seen on others of the thin planchet, engrailed edge type. The Roper piece, another very sharp example of this variety, shows the reverse misaligned to the same position and degree as this example. This variety is significantly scarcer than the other two Guide Book listings for the Mott token. Seldom encountered with such quality and eye appeal, regardless of variety, this piece would serve exquisitely in a type set or a carefully assembled collection highlighting the different varieties of this early American store card. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from Heritage's PNG New York Invitational Signature Auction of October 2014, lot 3036. PCGS# 607. NGC ID: 2B5M.
