1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 66-v, W-5505. Rarity-5+. Head Right

1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 66-v, W-5505. Rarity-5+. Head Right, Braided Mane. VF-20 (PCGS). CAC. 155.2 grains. SHI DS1. An unusually well pedigreed and very appealing example of a very elusive major variety, the so-called "Braided Mane." Cataloged in our (Stack's) Robert Kissner sale of June 1975, including the Damon Douglas collection of New Jersey coppers, as: A nice striking on a very broad planchet. A few very minor planchet defects. The mane is sharp. Light chocolate brown. This piece brought $725 in the 1982 Robison sale, $715 in the 1983 Roper sale - a lot of money at the time. Some very light little hairlines are noted under a glass on the obverse. Very few nicer 66-vs have sold since this piece last appeared at auction in 1983. Maris-Garrett-Taylor, Ryder-Boyd-Ford and Spiro-Craige-Martin were exceptional. The Condition Census includes EF coins and runs down to VF. That five great collections - Douglas, Robison, Roper, Royce and Emerald Coast - all included this should be testament enough to its standout quality for this elusive variety. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from our (Stack's) sale of Damon Douglas Collection, June 1975 Sale, lot 171; our (Stack's) sale of the Robison Collection, February 1982, lot 187; our (Stack's) sale of the John L. Roper 2nd Collection, December 1983, lot 312; our sale of the John "Jack" Royse Collection, November 2012 Baltimore Auction, lot 6086. PCGS# 516765. NGC ID: 2B4Y.
