1788 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 13-N, W-6380. Rarity-4+. No Period After MASSACHUSETTS. AU-53 (PCGS). Handsome chestnut-brown surfaces with streaks and blushes of olive-gray that are most pronounced through the central obverse. Texture is hard and frosty, the planchet is choice, and both sides are smooth with just a few faint handling marks that require magnification to discern. A hint of softness involves the tops of the letters MON at the upper left obverse border, but the detail is otherwise bold to sharp throughout. This is a particularly important die marriage for major variety collectors, as the only No Period After Massachusetts reverse die is Ryder Reverse N, which was used in only two die combinations: 1788 Ryder 6-N and 1788 Ryder 13-N, seen here. The latter is the scarcer of the two, and the present example compares favorably to the Richard August coin in PCGS AU-55 that realized $2,280 in our November 2025 Showcase Auction.
