1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 28-L, W-5065. Rarity-3. No Sprig Above

1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 28-L, W-5065. Rarity-3. No Sprig Above Plow, Disappearing Knobs. VF-20 (PCGS). SHI DS2, the knobs at the ends of the plow handles just barely perceptible. Lovely burnt-orange in color with areas of darker tobacco patina shadowing the devices. A few natural planchet striations are confined to the peripheries, and the complexion is pleasantly glossy in-hand. Uniformly bold and absolutely original. The precise cause of the weakening of the plow handles has puzzled specialists, who have suggested lapping or a filled die, though a confident conclusion is yet to be reached. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex Bowers and Merena, March 1995, privately; Larry L. Terrell; our sale of the Collection of Larry L. Terrell, May 2019 Baltimore Auction, lot 3216. PCGS# 506. NGC ID: AUL8. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
