1787 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 19-87C, W-7940. Rarity-2. GEORGIVS III, Group III. EF-40 (PCGS). Warmly and evenly toned in walnut and olive-brown, the surfaces are hard and frosty, just a tad rough, upper part of seated figure's body carrying the only marks of note in the form of a few faint pin scratches. Obverse trivially off center to 6 o'clock with no denticulation, but all design elements are fully rendered and bold. The reverse is also a bit off center, to 12:30, but border denticulation is complete in all areas save for at upper right, the date, seated figure and peripheral lettering are bold. This coin's advanced die state leaves a substantial area of spalling below George's chin, a break on the stop after REX, and more spalling within the design of the cuirass. The obverse looks fatigued despite this being its only marriage, while the reverse looks fresh as a daisy despite being on marriage number two of seven (eight if you count a later marriage to Obverse 19, where this reverse does start to show its age).
