"1781" (post-1839) General Daniel Morgan, Battle of the Cowpens Medal.

"1781" (post-1839) General Daniel Morgan, Battle of the Cowpens Medal. Dies by Jean-Jacques Barre, after Dupre. Betts-593, Julian MI-7. Bronze. MS-63 BN (NGC). 56.0 mm. An endearing example of one of the most celebrated early American medals, struck from the dies faithfully duplicated in Paris for use by the Philadelphia Mint. Rich mahogany-brown patina overall, the finish is satiny, the surfaces with only small, widely scattered carbon flecks precluding a higher numeric grade. As the era of the American Revolution continues to be celebrated through the semi-quincentennial and beyond, the 1781 Battle of Cowpens is worth particular recognition. Though small and fought in an isolated clearing in South Carolina, the battle spurred the Continental Congress to award three medals, of which this type was the only one awarded to a general. The remarkable story of the loss and replacement of General Morgan's own gold medal has been presented to a worldwide audience after our record-setting sale of the gold medal given to Morgan's heirs in 1839, the very medal that caused these dies by Barre to be made in the first place. As that medal's fame continues to soar, examples like this one will continue to see significant demand. Provenance: From the Henry Mitchell Collection. Purchased from John Kraljevich, February 2008.
