1774 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 5-74A, W-7760. Rarity-3. GEORGIVS

1774 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 5-74A, W-7760. Rarity-3. GEORGIVS III, Group I. EF-40 (PCGS). CAC. One could spend a lifetime searching and not find a nicer example of this Vlack number. We have sold four certified EF-45s since 2018, yes, but this coin is comparable if not better than all of those. Hard and frosty surfaces are dressed in original olive-brown patina with hints of chestnut in a few isolated areas, most notably in the left obverse field. A touch of softness to the central strike detail hardly detracts, especially since both sides are ideally centered and the design elements are impressively bold overall. Several thin, shallow fissures at central obverse are native to the planchet, and since they require magnification and intent to discern they are mentioned here solely for accuracy. No troublesome marks are seen, and the planchet is positively choice. This piece is finer than the 2024 Howes-Rosen-Trudgen plate coin, and it is little wonder that Bob Vlack selected it to represent these dies in his indispensable reference Early American Coins. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. The plate coin in the Vlack reference on early American coins. PCGS# 932. NGC ID: 2B3Y. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
