A SONGHUA INK STONE, BOX AND COVER\n\nQIANLONG INCISED FOUR-CHARACTER SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)\n\nThe soft greyish-green ink stone is carved with a lingzhi-shaped well, and an outline conforming to that of the shallow box and cover which is finely carved on the top through the greyish-green outer layer to the purplish-brown under layer with a heron perched on the trunk of a pine tree. The four-character mark is incised in a line on the base of the ink stone. Accompanied by a publication of Bunbo Nyumon Koza – Kansho Hen by Aiura Shizui in which the present ink stone is illustrated.\n\n3 3/4 in. (9.6 cm.) long Christie's

Venice: Gregorius de Gregoriis, 21 November 1516. 2° (296 x 205mm). 3 large woodcut illustrations. (Lacks final ?blank, title a little soiled, unsightly worming in lower inner margins from D5 to G3.) 17th-century red morocco, gilt ornament in panels of spine, gilt and blind-stamped borders round sides, gilt corner-pieces of a fleur-de-lys and a smaller ornament and, at the centre, the arms of a cardinal or bishop (spine torn at foot, some scuffing and soiling, edges rubbed, lacking ties). Provenance: a few marginalia in a contemporary hand -- D. Vincenzo Bianchini (19th-century book label) -- Compagnia del Gesú (book label).\n\nFIRST EDITION (another appeared a year or two later with differences in the preliminaries) of this instructive work which describes every important ceremony to be observed in the Catholic Church, from the election of a pope or emperor to the canonisation of a saint, the various itineraries of a pope, everything which pertains to councils, bulls, vestments, genuflexion, when to read the Gospel in Greek, and all the major feast days in the year.
