Daghestan Prayer Rug The splendid palette makes this beautiful prayer rug, probably woven in one of the villages of Daghestan in north eastern Transcaucasia, especially striking. The white field under the bridge-like mihrab is covered by a hexagonal lattice of deep blue lines enclosing multi-coloured, stylised, geometric cup palmettes. The intersection points of the lattice have been accentuated. The S designs of the border, crossed at an angle, have lately been interpreted as abstract representations of birds or dragons. Prayer rugs of similar design and composition were also woven in the areas of Kuba and Shirvan further to the south, but they diverge from Daghestan rugs in their slightly different style of drawing and palette. Low pile, reselvedged, somewhat reduced ends. Origin: North East Caucasus Size: 131 x 96 cm Age: N/A Rippon Boswell & Co.

Kozak The village of Kozak, situated north of Bergama, chiefly produced small-format carpets with geometric designs reminiscent of Caucasian weavings. It inhabitants are said to have migrated there from the Kazak region. Two blue box shapes decorated with four arrows, reminiscent of certain Shahsavan gül designs, are aligned on the central axis of the light red field. Similar ornaments, halved or quartered by the border, are offset against these. The reciprocal effects produced by this arrangement create a complex overall appearance through simple means. The leaf and calyx vine in the white-ground border is purely Caucasian in character. The dot knotted into the upper kilim finish has a symbolic meaning: it assumes the character of an amulet to ward off evil from the owner. Completely preserved with the original finishes all around and a high pile, some damage to the kilims. Origin: North West Anatolia, Bergama region Size: 140 x 85 cm Age: Late 19th century Rippon Boswell & Co.
