Western Asiatic Ring Collection

A mixed group of bronze rings, all accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (T-923) 'Bronze Finger Ring, 18 x 9 x 19mm. Band hoop attached to oblong bezel. Subject: rabbit or similar animal in notched frame. Sassanian, c. 300-600 A.D.'; (T-919) 'Bronze Finger Ring, 18 x 14 x 17mm. Small size: arching hoop attached to thick round bezel. Subject: standing horse, branch. Sassanian, c. 300-600 A.D.'; (T-920) 'Bronze Finger Ring, 21 x 12 x 23.5mm. Slender hoop broadening to heavy bezel of oval shape. Subject: two sprouting 'cornucopiae' etc. in linear frame. Sassanian, c. 300-600 A.D.'; (T-918) 'Bronze Finger Ring, 23 x 15 x 19mm. Thin hoop broadening to round bezel. Subject: standing bovine with head turned back, two crescents. Hellenistic/Parthian, c. 200 B.C. - 200 A.D.'; (T-915) 'Bronze Finger Ring, 20 x 10 x 17mm. Small hoop widening to oval bezel. Subject: standing bird, vertical crescent behind. Near East, c. 100-300 A.D.'; (T-914) 'Bronze Finger Ring, 23 x 10 x 24mm. Thin hoop leading to oval bezel with shoulders. Subject: walking lion, crescent above. Eastern Mediterranean, c. 100-300 A.D.'; 'Signet Ring of Bronze, 15 x 21 x 19mm. This is made from a piece of sheet metal, cut, bent and joined at the back. The bezel shows a standing horned quadruped. This comes from anywhere between the Black Sea and West central Asia, and dates [from] c. 200 B.C. to 400 A.D. It is in fine condition.'; (D-33) 'Signet Ring of Bronze, 14 x 22 x 24mm. This has a flat oval bezel and a carefully shaped hoop rising from the modelled back. The design shows two front parts of horned animals with front paws marked, and their bodies joining in the middle with a single section rising above the join. This comes from somewhere between the Black Sea and west central Asia and dates to c. 1300-900 B.C. It is in fine condition.'; (K-41) 'Signet Ring of Bronze, Bezel: 14 x 13mm, With hoop: 26 x 22mm. This has a thin hoop which thickens at the point where the solid bezel is attached. The face of the bezel is flat, and engraved with a standing bird with high erect tail feathers. There is an inscription in front of the bird. This is reported to have come from central Asia, which is entirely possible, and it may date to c. 200 B.C. to 200 A.D. Decipherment of the inscription will give a more precise result. The seal is in good condition.'; 'Finger Ring of Bronze, 23 x 13 x 19mm. This was made from sheet metal, the bezel hammered out flat and the two ends bent around and joined at the back. The bezel is engraved with a standing stag with head turned backwards and a crescent in the sky.
